Pursuing a university teaching career, he taught in the United States, China, and Europe.  Most of his career, however, was spent in western New York.  After taking pre-retirement in 2007 and moving to Languedoc in the south of France, he returned to his first love – painting. In France, he studied with several well-known French artists.  Some in France say that there are two major qualities of Northcutt’s paintings:  they are luminous and romantic.  Much to his delight, some see a resemblance with his style and that of the celebrated artist  Edward Hopper.  Northcutt works in acrylics and attempts to capture the light, ambiance, and atmosphere in the south of France and in the Charleston, SC area. He is an exhibiting member of the Charleston and the Mount Pleasant Artist Guilds. His paintings can be seen at the Gallery of the Charleston Artist Guild, 160 East Bay Street, Charleston, SC.
