October 2017 - Gallery Featured Artist
The Charleston Artist Guild Gallery announces Susan Gilmore as the Featured Artist for the month of October. Susan’s exhibit, Land Escapes, is comprised of paintings in oil and cold wax that explore the beauty of Lowcountry wetlands and will be on display from October 1 through October 31.
Susan was born in Washington DC and her family moved to Charleston when she was still a girl. She spent her youth on James and Folly Islands and loved to be out in the wetlands, to explore the creeks, the marshes and the beach. These were the places she found a real sense of peace in her spirit. Susan loved the uniquely beautiful light at dawn and the evening twilight when the moonlight illuminated the scene. These moments had some special magic about them. She spent many mornings immersed in the dreamlike light and ambience of the moments just before daybreak, anticipating the first light peaking over the horizon. The rest of the world would fade away and the landscape would beguile her. This was her secret world and it left lasting impressions on her soul – impressions that have inspired her latest collection of work, Land Escapes.
Susan’s newest series of paintings is an effort to celebrate her memories of the spirit and beauty of the local wetlands. She is working with oil paints mixed with cold wax to create textures and hues that transport the scenery to the canvas in an impressionist abstract style. Susan has taken a fairly new style of painting and improvised with her own personal techniques for applying color to canvas. The result is lively, vibrant images, and a style uniquely her own.
