Our guild has the great pleasure of welcoming world-renowned artist and Charleston resident, Mary Edna Fraser as our January guest speaker. Awarded with the 2016 Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Award from the S.C. Arts Commission, Fraser has shared her beautifully crafted batiks both locally and internationally. Using her own aerial photography from her family’s vintage plane, along with satellite photography, maps, and charts, Fraser uses batik dye techniques on silk to produce awe-inspiring and compelling designs that illustrate both local and international aerial landscapes and watersheds. She has also collaborated on two books that demonstrate her commitment to the conservation of these precious ecosystems: A Celebration of the World’s Barrier Islands and Global Climate Change: A Primer. When not creating her beautiful batiks, Fraser is also an accomplished oil painter.
