The Charleston Artist Guild’s general meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at the Irene Dixon Auditorium at Roper St. Francis Hospital. Free parking will be available.
We are greatly looking forward to our speaker, James Pratt, who will provide a live demo of his techniques. James is a Palette Knife Impressionist and will demonstrate “How to”…mix the colors, how to mix the values, how to pick the paint correctly, how to apply the paint in order to create an “Alla Prima” painting. He will also demonstrate on a larger canvas various strokes/elements that help make up a painting, such as how to paint an Arch, how to paint a pot with flowers, how to create reflections, etc..
James Pratt is a world renowned palette knife artist and is considered as one of the “Modern Masters.” James was born in Wellington, New Zealand, moved to Los Angeles in the early 1980’s and became a US citizen in 2013. James and his wife, Beverly, are now living in a country home outside of Charleston, SC and when not there, they enjoy spending time at their home in Southern France.
James was introduced to art at young age by his father while sitting on his lap and copying his father’s pencil drawings. His life has always revolved around design and creativity. His great grandfather immigrated to New Zealand from England in 1858 and is a published writer and his art hanging in the Museum of Art, Auckland, New Zealand.
James paints with a palette knife which he has been using for over fifteen years. He studied how to paint Alla Prima and finds the knife the best tool to encourage a lively and impressionistic treatment; providing an exciting contrast of scale, adding greatly to the impact of the finished painting.
